Baby Health Tips

There are many things parents should be looking out for when they are caring for their child.  There are many symptoms for you to look out for. If you suspect your baby is unwell, trust your judgment – phone the doctor or if you view it as being more serious phone an ambulance. Better to be safe then sorry!

  1. Always sleep your baby on their back at the foot of the cot. Either use a baby sleeping bag or make sure sheets/covers are loose and not above the babies shoulders. Never swaddle your baby and make them overheat.
  2. Be careful if you share a bed with your baby. I would always recommend you leave the baby to sleep in the cot. There are a few potential hazards if you let your baby sleep in the bed with you. This especially applies if you have been drinking, smoking or are particularly tired.
  3. Learn how to resuscitate your baby – By the time the ambulance has arrived it could be too late. Make sure you take lessons on how to resuscitate your baby and also learn some basic first aid.
  4. Make sure you use sun block for your child. Skin cancer is on the rise and any damage done when the child is young could cause skin cancer in later life. Take precautions like using plenty of sun block and get your child to wear a hat when in the sun. Remember when your child goes in to water you need to reapply the sun block.
  5. If you have a garden pond make sure this is either cordoned off or fill it in. When using paddling pools fill them in immediately after use.
  6. For fire safety and prevention make sure the bedroom door is shut at night. This may give that little extra time that could save you and your baby’s life.
  7. Do not keep poisons or toxic materials under the sink. Keep out of reach of your baby.
  8. When taking any medication or pain relieving pills – do not do it in the sight of your child. Remember children mimic your behaviour and it is possible they could follow this action.
  9. When breastfeeding restrict the amount of alcohol you consume. Remember do not drink large amounts of alcohol because it will be passed down to the baby.
